If you are like me, or many other people, you’ve never actually witnessed the great power of an avalanche, but that doesn’t stop us from fearing them. You don’t have to experience an avalanche to know its great destructive power. It’s highly unlikely that you will ever be caught in one of these yourself, but should it happen, would you know what to do? Keep reading to learn how to survive one of these icy power houses, but before we get into that I want to make one thing clear.

I spent the better part of my childhood growing up in sunny Southern Utah. It’s rare for snow to fall there, but when it does, it can shut things down pretty quick. For a long time, I hated the snow, but only recently have a found a different view of our powdery friend. Snow is a beauty of nature, and just like most things with nature, it can be your friend, or it can be your demise. The key is to both respect it, and enjoy it. Avalanches are the same way, they can be destructive and take lives, but one of the best things you can do to avoid being trapped by one is to learn for yourself what they are and how they work.
